An Option to Better Secure Your Building

Washington Elevator recently spoke at length with a City of Seattle Elevator Inspector about the unfortunate security challenges customers are facing with vandalism and theft. His recommendation, which we want to share, is to have buildings replace their existing (red) fire key box with a more secure 1400 series Knox Box.

Ordering from the KNOX Box Company directly, using the Seattle City code, will allow you to order it at considerable cost savings compared to other purchasing methods.

If a new 1400 series Knox key box is purchased and installed,

  1. Be sure to follow the mounting instructions for the best security guarantee of your building and to meet specifications within the code.

  2. Be sure to contact your City of Seattle Elevator inspector to schedule a time when he/she can secure the keys within the new building key retainer boxes.

  3. The District Conveyance Inspector (also known as Jurisdiction Having Authority or JHA) on behalf of the City of Seattle, must verify the box installation and correct placement of required keys.

Did you Know?

Key boxes are required to provide code required keys not only elevator inspectors, but also the Fire Department. The new 1400 series is an extremely robust vandal proof design if mounted and installed correctly. More questions? Reach out to our Chief Problem Solver, Sean!
